“I am thrilled to be elected as an EMBO member”, says Anastassis (Tassos). “It feels a bit like being back home, after two decades away. I previously received an EMBO long-term fellowship and I have been an EMBO Young Investigator. Also, I’ve performed my doctoral research and my research as a staff scientist and team leader to EMBO's sister organization, the EMBL.”
Lifelong honor Tassos joins a long list of NKI group leaders that are active EMBO members. Election as EMBO member recognizes a scientist’s research excellence and outstanding achievements. Each year the existing community of EMBO members selects new researchers for this lifelong honor. The chemistry of life and new drugs “I’m a strong believer of European collaboration in science and beyond”, says Tassos, who is endowed professor of Macromolecular Structures at Utrecht University. “Through EMBO I hope to continue my efforts on democratizing access to research infrastructures, strengthening European collaboration and maximizing the impact of structural biology on understanding the chemistry of life and assisting the development of new pharmaceuticals.”
Tassos’ research group at the Netherlands Cancer Institute and Oncode Institute studies large molecular structures. “Understanding the interaction of proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and lipids and the chemical mechanisms with which they modify each other or other molecules in a cell, is critical to better understanding the function of healthy cells and cancer cells and for the development of new drugs.”
