NKI Seminar by Lodewyk Wessels
Understanding and predicting therapy response in cancer
Lodewyk Wessels
Division of Molecular Carcinogenesis, The Netherlands Cancer Institute
Lodewyk Wessels grew up on a remote farm in South Africa, trained as an Electrical Engineer, pursued a PhD in theoretical machine learning and did a postdoc at the Delft University of Technology, striving to apply machine learning within the life sciences. His quest for data soon struck gold in the form of tumor molecular profiles from the NKI. He started a collaboration, which expanded rapidly, and ended up founding the first computational biology group at the NKI. His group focuses on the identification of cancer genes and their interactions, understanding and predicting drug response and computational immunology.
