Using AI to learn how cancer develops

Moritz Gerstung did his undergraduate work in physics at the University of Freiburg, Germany. In 2012, he earned his PhD in computational biology at the ETH Zurich. He then became a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in Hinxton, UK, where he analyzed cancer genome evolution. Since 2015, he has been a Research Group Leader at the European Bioinformatics Institute EMBL-EBI in Hinxton, UK, working on Cancer Data Science. In 2021, he became the Division Head for Artificial Intelligence and Cancer Evolution at the German Cancer Research Centre DKFZ and professor at the University of Heidelberg, Germany. His laboratory uses machine learning to understand the growth and development of tumors.
