We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to join the SpectraSkin project at the Netherlands Cancer Institute, Center for Early Cancer Detection. This innovative research aims to revolutionize early skin cancer detection using advanced hyperspectral imaging (HSI) technology combined with AI-driven analysis. The successful candidate will play an essential role in developing and validating portable, cost-effective HSI systems for clinical and point-of-care settings.

About the NKI-CVV:
The NKI Center for Early Cancer Detection (CVV), an initiative of the Netherlands Cancer Institute—an internationally recognized cancer research institute and hospital in Amsterdam—is pioneering advancements in early cancer detection. By utilizing MedTech innovations in this critical field, the NKI aims to transform cancer care, emphasizing the pivotal role of early detection in improving cancer survival over the next decade. These efforts promise to reduce the strain on healthcare systems, lower associated costs, and, most importantly, enhance patients' survival outcomes and quality of life.
Key responsibilities include:
  • Developing miniaturized HSI devices in a close collaboration with a Postdoc researcher;
  • Conducting data acquisition at the early detection center;
  • Developing and implementing state-of-the art machine learning and AI algorithms;
  • Collaborating with a multidisciplinary team, including technical researchers, data scientists, AI experts, dermatologists and pathologists;
  • Publishing findings in high-impact journals and presenting at international conferences.

Job requirements

  • A master’s degree in Technical Medicine, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field;
  • Affinity with medical technologies;
  • Strong interest in medical imaging, AI, and translational research;
  • Experience with machine learning frameworks, imaging systems, or optical imaging techniques is highly desirable;
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in Dutch and English;
  • Basic knowledge of clinical workflows or experience working in healthcare-related projects.
Required Skills:
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, and Matlab;
  • Familiarity with AI frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch);
  • Knowledge of imaging technologies, particularly hyperspectral or optical systems;
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation abilities;
  • Previous research experience in biophotonics or medical imaging;
  • Publications or conference presentations in related fields (desired).

Compensation

  • You will work in a cutting-edge research environment;

  • You will be employed for a period of at least four years, with a possibility for extension;

  • For a PhD student the gross salary per month can range from € 3.523,- to €4.277,- (salary PhD student scale), depending on your experience;
  • The terms of employment will be in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Hospitals (CAO Hospitals); 
  • In addition you will receive a fixed end-of-year bonus (8,33%) and you will receive 8,33% holiday pay; 
  • Your travel expenses will be reimbursed at € 0,23 per km. Free parking at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek is also part of the package; 
  • Personnel is stimulated to use public transport and bicycle and therefore we offer an interesting arrangement for bikers and/or discount on the NS-business card;
  • Amsterdam is a stunning city with many cultural amenities. The institute is located within a 20-minute tram or bicycle ride from the center of Amsterdam and within 20 minutes from Schiphol airport by car, bus or bicycle.
