The postdoc committee represents the interests of all postdoctoral fellows working at the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI). Our main goals are to evaluate and improve the work environment, and to facilitate training programs for NKI postdocs. The NKI has a sizable postdoc community of approximately 180 scientists, half of which has an international background, coming from around thirty different countries.
We are active in different types of projects, including providing practical support for current and new postdocs as well as organizing educational and social activities to promote interactions among the postdoc community.
In collaboration with Postdocs@NKI, the NKI Academy has developed a postdoc training program which provides NKI postdocs with opportunities to develop their skills in areas such as leadership, teamwork and career planning – topics relevant to postdocs both during their time at the NKI, but also beyond.
Since many postdocs will apply for grants or fellowships, postdocs@NKI organizes in-house grant writing courses for postdocs and senior PhD students. These courses help you to further develop your grant writing skills.
On a regular basis, we invite former NKI postdocs who have left our institute to pursue their careers in or outside of academic research. At these events and in an informal setting, NKI alumni talk about their career path and share experiences regarding their professional life after being a postdoc. These events may help you to further plan your future.
Knowing that good mentorship can have a huge positive impact on a postdoc’s career, we developed a program which connects postdocs to suitable mentors who can help them develop their careers and provide tailored advice to reach their goals.
Postdocs@NKI and the Expat Centre have made a brochure for foreign employees. This brochure contains information about moving to and working in the Netherlands, and can help you find your way before and after your first working day. Topics such as housing, insurance and bank accounts are addressed in the brochure.
