PhD students can apply in response to a vacancy or directly contact one of our group leaders if you are interested in joining his/her research group. Master and Bachelor students can directly contact one of our group leaders to inquire about the possibilities for a research project at our institute.
On average, PhD students take 5 years to complete their training. During this period you are thoroughly trained in life sciences, especially (molecular) oncology, and doing science (practical skills, scientific integrity). Your training at the NKI will give you an excellent start to launch a postdoc position or embark on another career path in science or elsewhere.
All PhD students follow the Oncology Graduate School Amsterdam training program. This school organizes courses and an annual retreat. Furthermore students attend seminars and work discussions and interact with the speakers. Moreover, they present their data at group, division and institute meetings.
Generally, the group leader is your daily supervisor, although senior group members will also contribute to your training. Each PhD student has his/her own supervisory committee that monitors progression of the research in annual meetings and gives advice to the PhD student and the supervisor throughout the entire PhD training program.
